UFC lightweight contender Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone will step inside the Octagon just two weeks after defeating top-ten fighter Myles Jury at UFC 182 this past weekend as he replaces a sick Eddie Alvarez to take on Benson Henderson in the co-main event at UFC Fight Night 59 in Boston, Massachusetts. UFC president announced the fight via Twitter yesterday.
The event will feature Conor McGregor and Dennis Siver in the main event, with a shot at featherweight champ Jose Aldo on the line for McGregor.
Former WEC and UFC lightweight champ Benson has faced Cerrone twice previously, both times under the WEC banner. The two first fought back at WEC 43 in October 2009, with Henderson earning a unanimous decision win in what was considered by many to be the best fight of the year. They rematched at WEC 48 the following year, this time Benson getting the win via first-round submission.
Cerrone will be looking to make it third time lucky against 'Bendo' when he makes a quick turnaround on January 18th. Despite the two previous losses to his next opponent, don't be surprised if Donald enters this third fight as a slight favourite as he has looked better than ever during his latest win streak. Meanwhile, Henderson is coming off the first KO loss of his career at the hands of Rafael dos Anjos in August at UFC Fight Night 49.
UFC Fight Night 59 is set to take place at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. Tickets are available here.
