Karl Gotch, the Catch Wrestling legend who trained many Japanese MMA fighters, died earlier this week aged 82.

Gotch, a Belgian professional wrestler who lent his name to the German suplex, was born Karl Isatz in 1924.  He trained at the legendary Snake Pit gym in Wigan under Bill Riley and wrestled in the USA and Japan.

Gotch trained many Japanese professional wrestlers, and his strong athletic style of wrestling (as opposed to the flashier entertainment-type wrestling seen in most pro wrestling) was adopted by the majority of his trainees and their contemporaries.

Satoru Sayama and Yoshiaki Fujiwara, two of his students, would go on to form early Shoot Wrestling events, precursers to modern MMA.
