The billion dollar fight that has the world enamored is no closer to being made, despite unsubstantiated reports in the British tabloids yesterday.

Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor both TKO’d rumors their big-money boxing match was close to being announced with separate social media posts in Las Vegas last night.

Mayweather, who stoked flames of a potential matchup against ‘Notorious’ earlier in the year by revealing on ESPN that he would only return for his 50th fight to face the UFC champion, moved to set the record straight on his Twitter account last night.

“Although there has been several rumors circulating thru media suggesting that I will have an upcoming fight, I’d like to set the record straight and state that there has been no deals made on my behalf in regards to a bout with any fighter at this time,” Mayweather wrote. “I am happily retired and enjoying my life! Rest assured that if any changes comes about, I will be the first to let the world know!”

McGregor, meanwhile, touched down in Las Vegas yesterday, where he is due to contribute to an anti-bullying program, but couldn’t help but respond to Mayweather by posting a picture of himself on a throne with the message: “I am in Las Vegas. Floyd has retired on my arrival.”

UFC president Dana White told FO’s consultant editor Gareth A Davies at the start of the month that the mooted super-fight is unlikely to happen, despite offering both $25 million to take the fight. While Bob Bennett, the NSAC executive director, also admitted signing off a boxing match between the pair would be difficult.

With so much money at stake in PPV  and gate revenue for the potential crossover matchup it’s likely talk of the fight will continue. But right now it’s a long away from being announced.
