China’s ONE women’s strawweight world champion Xiong Jing Nan underlined her complete dominance of her weight class by turning back her sixth title challenger in fine style.
“The Panda” defeated Japanese judoka Ayaka Miura in the main event of ONE: Heavy Hitters, which took place at Singapore Indoor Stadium on Friday.
Xiong’s unanimous decision victory may have left the champion herself a little disappointed at her inability to find a finish, but the manner of her victory still showed the gap between her and the rest of the strawweight division.
Miura’s hopes of victory lay in her ability to get the champion to the canvas, where she could then go to work with her submission attack.
However, Xiong effectively neutralized Miura’s grappling by keeping the fight on the feet. And, with the bout in the stand-up realm, “The Panda’s” striking arsenal proved decisive.
The victory meant Xiong’s championship reign extended to six title defenses, while her overall record improved to 17-2.
Now, it seems Xiong’s attention will be on adding another championship belt to her collection, as she announced her intention to drop to atomweight to challenge for the title currently held by Angela Lee, who takes on former ONE Muay Thai and kickboxing world champion Stamp Fairtex at ONE X in March.
