Cody Stamann is an exciting featherweight prospect from Michigan’s Detroit Top Team who makes his UFC debut on the preliminary portion of UFC 213 this Saturday (July 8) in Las Vegas. The highly-touted 27-year-old’s first UFC fight will be against Terrion Ware and his form prior to joining the UFC has many people excited to see how he fares.
In the March 2017 issue of Fighters Only magazine, Editor Michael Owens, a Stamann admirer, ran his expert eye over the featherweight’s credentials and forecast a big move for him in the not too distant future.
Name: Cody Stamann
Nickname: ‘Spartan’
From: Michigan (USA)
Age: 27
Weight: 145lb
Team: Detroit Top Team
Record: 14-1
Sometimes it takes just one fight to recognize a huge amount of potential in a fighter. That much was true when FO saw Cody Stamann’s victory over Farkhad Sharipov last year. The native of Sparta, Michigan had dynamic striking, put combinations together and was always putting pressure on his opponent. He also looked strong and had a wrestling game that provided a real takedown threat.
These skills are all the result of a noticeable improvement during the past several years and his eye-catching record is proof of that. It’s certainly the kind of slate that could turn some heads at some of the most high-profile promotions in the world – and it has.
The ‘Spartan’ was once scheduled to fight for Bellator – before his opponent missed weight – and the UFC is definitely interested in seeing him in the Octagon, but roster spaces are at a premium at the moment, meaning he’s yet to get a taste of national exposure.
However, Stamann is not one to sit around and wait for his chance.
“I definitely want to stay busy,” he says. “I think the best way that it could happen for me is that I’m getting ready for a fight and I get called up by a bigger organization. But, if it doesn’t happen, I definitely want to stay busy because that’s the only way fighters get better.”
With the ability to train full-time and a couple more wins on the regional scene, matchmakers may have no choice but to give him that big chance in the near future.
