Since Israel Adesanya burst on the UFC scene, he and UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones have been compared ad nauseam.
And following the Nigeria-born Kiwi’s interim UFC middleweight title win against Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 236, talks of a potential superfight between the two reached a fever pitch.
It’s an easy comparison to make. Both men fight at range with a dangerous arsenal of flashy strikes and have a penchant for the spectacular.
But Jones is less than convinced by Adesanya’s abilities following his wild, back-and-forth unanimous decision win over Gastelum on Saturday.
“Bones” took to Twitter to pour cold water over Adesanya’s win, posting a number of since-deleted tweets. Quotes via MMA Fighting.
“My man had a toe to toe kick boxing [sic] match with a short stubby wrestler. There’s only one Jon Jones ladies and gentlemen,” Jones said in one post.
When a fan thought Gastelum was getting some undue insults thrown his way, Jones replied: “That wasn’t my intention, nothing but respect for Kelvin. Dude Almost [sic] beat a kickboxer without throwing a single kick.”
Jones then ended his series of tweets, saying: “You guys can you [sic] believe the hype if you want to. I’ve seen all I had to see,” before later calling Adesanya a “b*tch.”
Jones is set to fight Thiago Santos next at UFC 239 on July 6th in Las Vegas. However, UFC President Dana White seemed interested in a future match-up between Adesanya and Jones some day.
