The headline bout at UFC 289 sees the return of one of the greatest female fighters of all time. Amanda Nunes is back to defend her UFC bantamweight title, and she’ll take on Irene Aldana in a five-round title matchup in Vancouver on Saturday, June 10.
Nunes’ reign as a two-division UFC champion briefly came to an end when she was shocked by Julianna Pene at UFC 269. But “The Lioness” bounced back immediately in the rematch to return to the top of the bantamweight division and resume her reign as the UFC’s queen at 135 and 145 pounds.
Her next text comes this weekend in Canada, where she’ll take on Mexico’s Irene Aldana, whose stoppage wins over Yana Santos and Macy Chiasson earned her the chance to step in when Pena was forced out of the originally-planned trilogy bout with Nunes. It means the event has a fresh man event, with first-time challenger Aldana looking to follow in the footsteps of Brandon Moreno and Alexa Grasso by becoming a Mexican UFC champion.
Ahead of the bout, the UFC’s Countdown cameras caught up with both fighters, and their teams, as they made their final preparations for their title clash. Check it out via the video player below.
